Creative director of Gucci, Alessandro Michele has confirmed the brand will debut its Cruise 2017 collection in London. This is a major change for the historic fashion brand, and one that several high-profile brands are likely to follow. Most recently, Karl Lagerfeld announced Chanel will debut its 2017 Cruise collection in Cuba. This year, Louis Vuitton debuted in Palm Springs, and Dior in Cannes.
Since Gucci’s headquarters are located in Florence, Italy, the brand’s collections have always debuted during Milan Fashion Week. Although there is no date or location for the show yet, there is no doubt the London-native, Michele, will find an interesting, probably exclusive location for the show.
However surprising this announcement is to the fashion industry, it actually isn’t that shocking. Since Michele took over as the CD (creative director) of Gucci, he has been seriously shaking things up within the company. Most notably in the direction of the styling and color combinations seen on this year’s runway for Gucci Fall 2015 & Spring 2016 shows. In September he told The New York Times, “It’s time for this brand to tell another story. I’m changing everything.” Watch a short video about the 2016 cruise collection below.
Since Michele’s takeover in January there have been obvious comparisons to his former boss Tom Ford. Michele worked under former Gucci creative director Tom Ford, as an accessories designer in 2002. Both designers share a desire and need to turn Gucci around.
Back in 1994, Tom Ford changed the direction of Gucci from a bankrupt, stuffy brand, to a brand young celebrities & sexy socialites wore. Ford quickly gained notoriety after his ad campaigns were printed in various magazines & posted on billboards.
Comparisons aside, one thing is sure, that Michele will be indeed changing the world of Gucci!
